How to Make the Most of an Externship Visit

  • Research the company beforehand
  • Dress business casual
  • Arrive on time (remember, you are responsible for transportation)
  • Bring your resume
  • Remember the names of those you are introduced to – jot down names or get business cards
  • Bring writing materials and take notes
  • Pay attention, ask questions, show enthusiasm, and have fun!
  • Send a thank-you note to the company contact person afterward
  • If there is an emergency (your car breaks down, you’re sick, etc.) and you are not able to participate: 

Sample Questions to Ask

  • What is a typical entry-level assignment or level of responsibility given to an engineer at your company?
  • Do you have an intern/co-op program?  If so, what are typical assignments?
  • What is a typical day like for an engineer?
  • What are possible career paths for an engineer at your company?
